Web Linking server status:

What is the difference between Basic and Premium?

The primary difference between the Basic and Premium versions of TypeWell's V8 Transcriber software is the type of linking they support. Linking refers to how the typed text is transmitted from the transcriber’s computer to the reader’s device.

Basic Transcriber (no longer offered to new licensees)

The Basic version was originally designed for peer-to-peer (ad hoc) linking between two Windows laptops in the same room, without needing an internet connection. It required the TypeWell Reader software to be installed on the reader’s laptop.

This version is no longer available for new licensees due to a combination of technical limitations and support concerns:

  • It requires administrative access to install Reader software, which is impractical in classrooms where students bring their own devices.
  • Peer-to-peer linking relies on older Windows features (like IBSS) that have been deprecated and may no longer work reliably on modern hardware.
  • These limitations make the Basic version increasingly difficult to support and maintain.

Individuals who previously used Basic may continue to renew it, as long as their hardware remains compatible.

Premium Transcriber

The Premium version supports both Web Linking and Internal Linking, making it suitable for modern, flexible setups:

  • Readers can use any device with a web browser, including tablets, smartphones, Chromebooks, and non-Windows laptops.
  • Transcribers can be on-site or remote.
  • No Reader software installation is needed, and Premium linking is compatible with current Windows networking standards.

Premium is required if:

  • The transcriber will be working remotely, or
  • The reader prefers to use a mobile device or non-Windows computer.
