What is Math Mode?

TypeWell's Math Mode dictionary is a specialized feature within the TypeWell software designed to assist transcribers in capturing mathematical expressions and technical notations accurately during live transcription. Unlike "regular mode," which is optimized for everyday language and general communication, Math Mode is tailored to handle the unique symbols, structures, and formatting requirements found in math and science subjects.

When a trained transcriber has Math Mode enabled, the TypeWell software interprets and transcribes their keystrokes using a different set of rules and shortcuts. This includes handling fractions, exponents, Greek letters, and other mathematical symbols that are not typically used in regular text. The transcriber can switch between Math Mode and regular mode as needed, allowing for seamless integration of mathematical expressions within the flow of normal language.

The key difference between Math Mode and regular mode lies in the dictionary and the way the software processes input. While regular mode is designed for transcribers to capture spoken language efficiently, Math Mode ensures that mathematical content is represented as it would appear in a textbook or on a whiteboard, making it accessible and clear for students relying on the transcription.

What is Math Mode Basics?

Math Mode Basics is a course series designed for experienced TypeWell transcribers, delivered through our Learning & Enrichment Online (LEO) platform.  The series is divided into lessons that teach the abbreviations and keystrokes for common math terms, with ample opportunity for hands-on drill and practice.

Why do TypeWell Transcribers take Math Mode Basics?

Math Mode introduces a new way of using the keyboard, requiring transcribers to develop a specific set of skills that aren't covered in the Basic Skills Course. While TypeWell’s classroom transcribing software, V8 Transcriber, includes a built-in Math/Science Tutorial, transcribers often need dedicated practice to gain confidence and proficiency.

It's important to remember that real job assignments are not the place to practice these skills. Students rely on us to provide accurate and timely communication access, so we must be fully prepared before transcribing live classes that involve complex mathematical content.

The Math Mode Basics course offers transcribers the opportunity to practice in a structured environment, ensuring they can seamlessly enter and exit Math Mode, use common operators with ease, and increase their speed and accuracy with the comma cycle key. By mastering these skills, transcribers can confidently take on STEM classes and provide the level of service that students deserve.

What are the prerequisites for Math Mode Basics?

Before enrolling in Math Mode Basics, transcribers should:

• Complete the Basic Skills Course with a passing grade,
• Have at least 6 months of experience working as a TypeWell transcriber, providing real-time communication access in English-based classes, and
• Be familiar with the content in the Math/Science Tutorial provided within the Transcriber software.

What is covered in Math Mode Basics, Part 1?

Part 1 of Math Mode Basics focuses on the foundational skills needed to effectively use Math Mode in a live transcription setting. It includes the following lessons:

1. Getting Into and Out Of Math Mode
2. Arithmetic Operators
3. Fractions
4. Variables and Exponents
5. Putting It All Together
6. Basic Math Lectures

These lessons are available as a bundle, allowing transcribers to practice and master the key components of Math Mode.

What is covered in Math Mode Basics, Part 2?

Part 2 of Math Mode Basics is currently in development, with only the first few lessons released so far. This part will build on the foundations from Part 1, covering more advanced topics such as:

1. Superscripts, Ctrl + H, and Ctrl + N
2. Complex Exponents, Ctrl + Space, and Times Dot
3. Subscripts, Combined Scripts, and Fractions
