INSTALLING THE INTERNAL SERVER
The Internal Server is a specialized type of software called a Service, and requires some familiarity with Windows administration to set up properly.
First, Uninstall the Old Internal Server (if applicable)
(If this is your first installation of the Internal Server, then skip this step.)
If you already have an older version of the server, you must uninstall it before you can install a new one. This requires Administrator access to the machine.
To uninstall:
Start a Command Prompt as Administrator.
In the Start menu, "Command Prompt" has been typed into the search bar. The application appears below the search bar. The right-click menu is expanded, and "Run as Administrator" is highlighted in blue.
Type the command "C:\Program Files\TypeWellServer\TypeWellServer.exe" and press Enter. Be sure to include the quotation marks.
The command prompt window is white text on a black background. It says, "Microsoft Windows (Version 6.1.7601). Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved." The command for the TypeWell Server appears on a new line.
This will pop up a box asking if you want to delete the service. Choose Yes.
The Windows Service dialog box says, "The service has already been installed. Do you want to delete it? Yes / No." The "Yes" button is highlighted in red.
The server is now uninstalled. If the program runs in step 1 but does not give an error as described in step 2, then repeat step 1 again. It should show the error message the second time.
Install Internal Server
You will need Administrator privileges to install the server.
- Download the Internal Server program
- Right-click on the downloaded program and choose Run as Administrator.
A File Explorer window showing the Downloads folder. The right-click menu for "TypeWellServer.exe" has been expanded, and the option "Run As Administrator" is highlighted in blue.
- When the self-extractor box comes up, click Unzip.
Dialog box for the WinZip self extractor. The text reads: "To unzip all files in twserver.exe to the specified folder press the Unzip button. Unzip to folder:" The text box underneath it gives a suggested file path for the unzipped files: "C:\Program Files\TypeWellServer." Under the text box, two options are checked: "Overwrite files without prompting" and "When done unzipping open TypeWellServer.exe." The "Unzip" button, to the right, is highlighted in red.
This will unzip the necessary files and will run the server. If all goes well, you'll see some stuff flash by and then a confirmation window.
The dialog box says, "6 files unzipped succssfully." The "OK" button is highlighted in red.
If you already had the server installed due to missing part of the uninstallation instructions above, then the install will pop up a box asking if you want to delete the old server. If this happens, choose Yes. The old server will then uninstall and you should redo the installation as Administrator.
If you get an error in step 2 above, saying it can't create output file TypeWellServer.exe, that means that you already have an older version. Follow the uninstallation instructions in the previous section. If you can see in the Control Panel for Services that you definitely have the TypeWellServer stopped, but are still getting this error, then you may have to reboot Windows for it to "take". Then try installing once more.
CHECKING INSTALLATION
To verify that the Internal Server is installed, start the TypeWell Transcriber program and click the Link menu, then select By Internal.
]
In TypeWell Transcriber, the Link menu is expanded. "By Internal" is highlighted in red.
If Internal Server is running, then the Internal Linking Setup window will look like this:
In the Internal Linking Setup window, three options for Internal Linking are given. The middle option, "Use internal server on this computer," is selected. Beaneath it, the WiFi name is given, "TWkcxx," and the Password is in a text box that can be edited. The password is currently set to "password."
Make sure the master linking control is ON.
In TypeWell Transcriber, the Link menu is expanded. "Linking ON" is highlighted in red.
Once the Internal Server is running, that means it has been installed into Windows' list of services. It will automatically run all the time the machine is on. If you reboot, Windows will start up the Internal Server again automatically. So, once it is installed, everything else is handled through the Link menu option in the Transcriber software.
Indications that Internal Server is NOT running
The Internal Linking Setup window will show a red message if the Internal Server is not running.
In the Internal Linking Setup window, the three options are given as before, but an error message appears in red. It reads: "Disabled because the Internal Server is not installed; see http://typewell.com/internalserver.html."
If that happens, try the steps above again to install the Internal Server.
If there is a red message saying the machine does not support VAP, that means that you did successfully install the server, but unfortunately it ran tests and determined that this computer does not support the special WiFi mode needed for Internal Linking. This may be a limitation of the WiFi device driver on that computer, OR you may simply need to update the WiFi device driver (see the Internal Linking - Troubleshooting page for more instructions about updating your WiFi device driver).
Administrators can also verify the server is running by checking the list of Windows Services. Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog, type services.msc and press Enter.
The Run dialogue box says: "Type the name of a program, folder, document, or Internet resource, and Windows will open it for you." Next to "Open," a text box is provided for the file name. "Services.msc" has been typed into the box. Three buttons are provided: "OK," "Cancel," "Browse..." "OK" is highlighted in light blue.
This will open the list of Windows Services. The Internal Server should be listed as TypeWell Internal Server and be shown as running or "Started".
A list of local services. Text reads, "Select an item to view its description." The Internal TypeWell Server is highlighted in red, showing that the status is "Started." This indicates that the TypeWell Server is running correctly.
Administrators can also see messages from the server using Event Viewer.
In Windows 7, open the Event Viewer by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Security, clicking Administrative Tools, and then double-clicking Event Viewer.
If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
In Windows 8, open the Event Viewer by pressing the Windows key + W and typing "event viewer".
In Windows 10, open the Event Viewer by pressing the Windows key and typing "event viewer."
ALLOW INTERNAL SERVER THROUGH WINDOWS FIREWALL
Windows comes with a built-in firewall, which may initially block the Internal Server from communicating with the TypeWell program. You will need to allow the Internal Server program to communicate through the Windows Firewall.
- Press the Windows key and Search by typing the word "firewall", and from the list of results, select Allow an app through Windows Firewall.
- Click Change settings. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
- Select the checkbox next to TypeWellServer.exe, and select the network locations you want to allow communication on, and then click OK.
"Allowed Apps" Dialog. The file path is shown at the top of the screen: "Control panel > System and security > Windows Defender Firewall > Allowed apps." Large blue text reads, "Allow Apps to communicate through Windows Defender Firewall." Underneath it, in smaller black text, it reads: "To add, change, or remove allowed apps and ports, click Change Settings." A list of allowed apps is shown, and typewellserver.exe is highlighted in blue and enabled for both public and private use.
If you don't see "TypeWellServer.exe" in this list of programs, click Allow another app...
Then click Browse...
The "Add an App" dialog reads, "Select the app you want to add, or click Browse to find one that is not listed, and then click OK." The mouse points to the "Browse" button, which is highlighted in blue.
Browse to C:\Program Files\TypeWellServer and click on the Application "TypeWellServer.exe" and click Open.
In the "Browse" dialog, the user can see a list of file folders on the left side of the screen. The file path, given at the top of the screen, reads "This PC > Windows (C:) > Program Files > TypeWell Server." In the list of files and folders on the right side of the screen, TypeWellServer.exe is highlighted in blue. The mouse is pointing to the "Open" button, highlighted in blue, at the bottom of the screen.
Then click Add.
The "Add an App" dialog appears as before, but this time, the file path is copypasted into a blank text box. The mouse is pointing to the "Add" button, highlighted in blue at the bottom of the screen.
This will add the TypeWell Internal Server to your list of Windows Firewall exceptions.
CONNECTING THE TRANSCRIBER AND READER DEVICES VIA THE INTERNAL SERVER
To enable Internal Linking, start the TypeWell Transcriber program and click the Link menu, then select by Internal.
In TypeWell Transcriber, the Link menu is expanded. "By Internal" is highlighted in red.
Select the second radio button to tell TypeWell to link to the Internal Server on your computer, and replace the word "password" with your own new password, if needed.
Then share the WiFi name and password with the reader and/or your team transcriber, so they can also connect their devices to your Internal Server's Access Point.
Here is an example of how the Access Point would appear in the WiFi chooser on an Android smartphone:
WiFi list on an Android smartphone, with the Internal Server Access point, named "TWq5yv," listed first. Its status is "Authenticating..." A red call out box says, "The Internal Server's Access Point will always be called TWxxxx where xxxx are random numbers and letters."
In the TypeWell Transcriber program, be sure to turn the master linking control ON under the Link menu.
In TypeWell Transcriber, the Link menu is expanded. Master Linking is ON.
While TypeWell is searching for the Internal Server on your computer, the Link menu will flash "Linking" and the status bar in the lower right corner of the TypeWell Transcriber window will also flash "Internal (searching)."
TypeWell Transcriber window. The "Link" menu, highlighted in pale blue, has changed to "Linked," and the lower right corner of the screen shows the text "Internal (searching)," also highlighted in pale blue.
Once the TypeWell Transcriber program links successfully with the Internal Server on the same machine, the status bar in the lower right corner of the Transcriber window will no longer show "(Searching)" and will instead display the solid word, "Internal."
TypeWell Transcriber window shown as before, but the lower right corner of the screen shows the text "Internal," highlighted in pale blue.
The transcriber can then click on the word "Internal" to copy the channel's URL to the clipboard, to paste into an email or instant message to send to the reader(s). When "Internal" is clicked, TypeWell displays a confirmation window indicating that the URL is on the transcriber's clipboard.
Once the URL is copied, a dialog box appears with the text, "The clipboard now contains the URL: http:// 192.168.173.1/"
All the transcriber has to do is paste (Ctrl+V) the URL in a message to the reader. The reader(s)—who must be connected to the Internal Server's password-protected Access Point—will then click the link or copy/paste the unique URL into the address bar of their Web browser.
