To stream a TypeWell transcript to a nearby device without using the internet, you’ll need to install the Internal Server on the transcriber’s computer. This enables Internal Linking, which creates a temporary local WiFi network (named something like TW1625) that the reader device can join.
⚠️ Note: Internal Linking is ideal for environments without reliable internet. However, streaming TypeWell text uses very little data, so if you have access to a school or cellular hotspot, Web Linking may be easier to set up.
⚠️ Important: Some Windows 10/11 systems display “hosted network supported: no,” but this does not prevent Internal Linking from working. The Internal Server uses its own method to broadcast the TWxxxx network, which still functions on most modern systems.
This article will walk you through:
- Installing required dependencies
- Installing the Internal Server
- Allowing it through the firewall
- Verifying that it’s running correctly

Internal Server – Troubleshooting
Requirements
- Windows 10 or higher
- Administrator privileges to install and configure the Internal Server
Step 1: Install Visual C++ Redistributable
The Internal Server requires the Visual C++ 2015 runtime libraries.
Download and install from Microsoft:
Download Visual C++ Redistributable
Step 2: Uninstall Old Versions (if applicable)
If you previously installed an older version of the Internal Server:
Open the Start Menu, search for Command Prompt, right-click → select Run as Administrator.
Enter this command (with quotes):
"C:\Program Files\TypeWellServer\TypeWellServer.exe"
Click Yes if prompted to delete the service.
💡 If nothing happens the first time, run the command again. You should see a confirmation message the second time.
Step 3: Install the Current Internal Server
Download the latest TypeWellServer.exe
Right-click the downloaded file → choose Run as Administrator.
If you see “Windows protected your PC,” click More info, then Run anyway.
In the self-extractor window, click Unzip.
You should see a confirmation when the files extract successfully.
Step 4: Check the Installation
Open TypeWell Transcriber.
Go to the Link menu → select By Internal.
Choose Use internal server on this computer, then click OK.
Turn Linking ON.
You may briefly see Internal (searching). When successful, the status bar will show Internal (Linked).
💡 If the server is not running, you’ll see an error message.
If you see a warning about VAP not supported, refer to Internal Server – Troubleshooting.
Step 5: Allow Through Windows Firewall
To ensure the Internal Server can communicate with the reader device, allow TypeWellServer.exe
through Windows Firewall.
Press the Windows key, search for firewall, and select Allow an app through Windows Firewall.
Click Change settings.
Find and check TypeWellServer.exe for both Private and Public networks.
If it's not listed, click Allow another app…
Browse to: C:\Program Files\TypeWellServer\TypeWellServer.exe
Click Add.
Step 6: Confirm the Server Is Running
Before testing with a second device, confirm that the Internal Server is running properly on the transcriber’s computer.
In TypeWell, go to Link → By Internal, select Use internal server on this computer, and turn Linking ON.
You may briefly see Internal (searching) in the TypeWell status bar:
When the connection is successful, the status bar will show: Internal
Open a browser on the same computer (the transcriber's computer) and go to: http://127.0.0.1
If the Web Reader displays your live transcript, the Internal Server is installed and running correctly.
Step 7: Test Internal Linking with a Second Device (Optional)
We recommend testing Internal Linking in advance using a second device you control, such as your phone, tablet, or another computer. Avoid relying on a student or consumer to help with setup or testing. This should be completed before your first job or session using Internal Linking.
Make sure TypeWell Transcriber shows Internal (linked)
in the lower-right corner of the screen.
Click the word Internal. A small window will pop up, showing the IP address used by the reader device. That IP address is now copied to your clipboard.
On your second device, join the TWxxxx network.
Open a browser and go to: http://
✅ If you see the transcript on the second device, Internal Linking is fully functional!
