Web Linking server status:

Internal Server - Troubleshooting

Note: If you see outdated references in the TypeWell Transcriber software, please refer to this article for the most current instructions. For example, modern versions of Windows no longer support broadcasting a "TWxxxx" network, and hostednetwork commands are deprecated.

To install the Internal Server, see: Internal Server - Installation
To set up a reader device, see: Setting Up Internal Linking
To read about updates to the Internal Server, see: Internal Server Revisions

First Steps

Did you reboot the computer after installing or changing settings?

Many Internal Linking issues resolve with a simple reboot. Always restart after installing the Internal Server, changing firewall settings, or updating drivers.

Is the Internal Server running?

  1. Press the Windows key and search for services. Select View local services.
  2. Locate TypeWell Internal Server (or TypeWell Server) in the list. Confirm the Status shows Started or Running.

View local services

TypeWell service running

If not, right-click the entry and choose Start (or Restart). If the Startup Type is set to Manual, change it to Automatic (Delayed Start) under Properties > General tab.

Firewall and Antivirus Conflicts

Check Third-Party Firewalls

  1. Disconnect from the internet temporarily.
  2. Turn off any antivirus software and third-party firewalls.
  3. Confirm that TypeWellServer.exe is allowed through Windows Firewall.

Linking Off

Turn Linking OFF in TypeWell during this process.

Once resolved, turn your firewall/antivirus back on and create necessary exceptions.

Device Driver Issues

Update WiFi Adapter Drivers

  1. Press the Windows key and search for device > open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Network adapters.
  3. Right-click your WiFi adapter > choose Update Driver > Search automatically.

Update driver

If Windows doesn’t find an update, visit the adapter manufacturer's site to search manually. Reboot after updating.

Driver Support Sites:

Intermittent or Unreliable Connection

Reset the WiFi Adapter

Disable and re-enable the WiFi adapter in Network Connections.
See Microsoft support instructions

Log Off Windows

Log off and back in. It may restore Internal Linking without a full reboot.

Reboot Again

Try a full system reboot (not just Sleep or Hibernate). If it only works after reboot, let us know: support@typewell.com

Extended Troubleshooting

These steps help identify more complex issues. Follow them in order:

Step 1: Check for red text in the Internal Linking setup window

  • In TypeWell, go to Link > By Internal
  • If it says the server isn’t installed, recheck that it’s running in Services

TypeWell Server in Services

Step 2: Test the local server address

On the transcriber’s computer, open a browser and go to:
http://127.0.0.1

  • If you see a TypeWell page or message, the server is running.
  • If not, something may be blocking port 80.

Advanced step: Open Command Prompt and type netstat -ao. Look for entries using port 80 and note their PID. Use Task Manager to identify what programs are using the port. You may need to close or reconfigure the conflicting program.

Step 3: Verify connectivity from reader device

If TypeWell says "Searching" even though http://127.0.0.1 works:

  • Confirm both devices are on the same WiFi network (e.g., Mobile Hotspot or Portable Router)
  • Click "Internal" in the TypeWell status bar to get the IP address
  • Open a browser on the second device and enter that IP

If the reader device can’t access the page, try testing with another device. Also check firewall settings again on the transcriber computer.

Step 4: Contact Support

If you reached this point, email us:

  1. Open Command Prompt and type: cd Desktop ipconfig /all > ipdata
  2. Email the ipdata file to: support@typewell.com

Final Tip

Always reboot after making changes. It may take a minute or two for Internal Server to start again.
