Can TW automatically insert today's date or a time stamp?

Lisa May 06, 2014 01:25PM MST

I think it would be wonderful that if in the PAL there could be a time stamp. For instance, I could say EC and get [End of Class: 3:36pm]. Or ST [Start time: 1:22pm]. Etc.

Hi Lisa,

You may already know about the {date} shortcut that you can include in a PAL entry. Many transcribers include {date} in their class header abbreviations, to automatically insert today’s date along with the header at the start of each class.

For example, you might create this PAL entry for the abbreviation AH:

Art History
Prof. John Doe

When you type “AH” on January 1, 2015, it will expand to:

Art History
Prof. John Doe
Thursday, January 01, 2015

In Transcriber and Everywhere V7, there are some very useful “leading slash” abbreviations that were introduced in Turbo 2. The abbreviations /dt and /dd both automatically expand today’s date. (TypeWell uses the system date on your computer.) Note that you have to be in Turbo mode for those leading slash abbreviations to work.

I do not recall why /tm doesn’t automatically do the same thing and insert the system time. However, I just tested in my TypeWell Transcriber V7 and was able to create a PAL entry with the shortcut {time} and it did insert the current time. For the examples you suggested, I would create PAL entries as follows:

EC —> [End of Class: {time}]
ST —> [Start time: {time}]

TypeWell uses the current time from your computer’s clock, including “AM” or “PM”. (Note that I tried this same thing with my TypeWell Everywhere V7 and it did not work except in the Everywhere window itself; in other programs, /tm just expanded to {time} with the curly brackets.)

I’d love to hear whether this {time} shortcut in TypeWell Transcriber works consistently across all operating systems, or if I just happened to be lucky on mine. Let us know if it works for you!
