It is stated that transcribers are to summarize videotapes, both captioned and uncaptioned, but there is no more clarification on this.
If a student is being shown a full-length film with captions, are we to summarize the entire film? Each scene? Give a summary at the end of the film? And how long should this summary be? I'm a bit confused thinking that summarizing each scene or the entire film could be distracting for the student and possibly cause them to miss reading the captions on the screen. I would like to do what is best for the student and what is required.
I'd appreciate more direction on this. I have had previous coworkers who merely write [video with captions] and nothing else. Now I have coworkers saying we need to summarize every video -- I am just uncertain as to what that really means and entails.

You’re right that we don’t focus on video summaries in the TypeWell Basic Skills Course. Here’s what I recommend (if the video IS captioned): type a quick transcriber comment enclosed in square brackets, indicating that there was a championed video about ____. That is, provide a one-line summary/description or simply the title of the video (if they show a whole movie), so that the transcript contains a record of which video was watched. It could be helpful for a student, AFTER class, to see that brief reminder of what the video was. That provides context for the ensuing class discussion that you will capture in the transcript.
