Which version do I need?
Can anyone purchase and use the TypeWell software?
No, the TypeWell transcribing software can only be licensed to graduates of the TypeWell transcribing course (see: Basic Skills Course), or their employers. The software is not available for public use, because it's part of a complete "system":
- a consumer or reader utilizing speech-to-text services for real-time;
- a human transcriber trained in how to effectively provide communication access; and
- the software program with features designed for both the consumer and the transcriber.
If I only transcribe during the academic year, should I license the TypeWell software by the month or the year?
The annual price is more cost effective if you use the TypeWell software 9 or more months out of the year. For example, if you’re a V7 Premium user at $34/month, then you can purchase a full year for $279 (compared to 9 individual months totaling $306).
The steep discount on the annual rate is designed to make life simpler for academic-year transcribers, who typically purchase a year at a time.
How does the monthly/annual pricing compare to TypeWell’s previous pricing system?
Our pricing system, based on monthly/annual usage, is designed to be responsive to changing needs and technology. In the past, each TypeWell software license was sold as a "perpetual" license but did not include software updates. Each time a major new version was released, users had to pay again to upgrade.
Now, new features are released in free updates. There are no extra charges beyond the monthly or annual price listed on on our website.
With the new pay-as-you-go licenses (purchased by the month or year), users continue to receive free tech support, maintenance, and updates. Reader licenses are free.
With V7 Premium, transcribers can use our streaming text platform (Web Linking) for free, as much as they want. The biggest benefit is that upgrades are included, so you'll enjoy new features and improvements that TypeWell rolls out on a continual basis instead of having to wait several years for a big version release.
TypeWell offers discounted pricing on select V7 software licenses for qualifying academic institutions and non-profit organizations, including:
- Public or private schools, technical institutions, vocational schools, junior colleges, and universities
- Accredited public elementary, secondary and/or vocational schools or school districts
- Educational administrative offices and boards of education
Charitable organizations operating on a not-for-profit basis and with tax exempt status
The discount should be applied automatically when your account manager purchases or renews software licenses in your TypeWell account online.

What’s the difference between a software license and a license key?
A license key is a code used to activate the software on a particular machine. This alphanumeric code is generated by the TypeWell server and then entered by the user into a license activation window, which displays on the screen during software installation. The license key is matched to the installation number on the user’s machine, to ensure that the key is not being used for multiple installations. Once a license key is validated, the TypeWell software program on that particular machine is activated.
Can I try V7 and then revert back to an older version?
You are welcome to try V7 for free! Note, however, that once you upgrade an older license to V7, you cannot revert that license back to an older version. That's because we will not support those older versions indefinitely. Instead, we will develop new features, updates, and bug fixes for the current version, which is designed to be stable on the latest Windows platforms.

What happens when my V7 license expires?
When your V7 license subscription is about to expire, you’ll be prompted to renew online. We'll send you an email around the 11th of the month prior to expiration. Once payment is accepted for your license renewal, you can refresh the license key in your software program to continue using TypeWell.
Even if you have an annual license, you will still be prompted periodically to “refresh” your license key (see "What's the difference between a license and a license key?" above). That is, your license may paid for through some future date, but you may be prompted to refresh your license key every few months. This is an important quality assurance measure designed to protect all TypeWell users.
That feature is also what enables you to transfer your TypeWell license to a different machine -- up to two times per year -- in case you have a laptop that goes in for repair, or you decide to purchase a new laptop.
If I have a V6 Premium license, can I still use Web Linking?
Yes, but you’ll need the Web Linking add-on subscription in order to continue using that feature of the V6 Premium Transcriber software. The Web Linking add-on costs $29/month or $239/year.
Why isn’t Web Linking free anymore?
Web Linking is free for V7 Premium users.
We work hard to keep our Web Linking servers running very reliably, so that clients do not experience any interruptions in service. When we released Web Linking with TypeWell V6 Premium in 2011, we announced to customers that this service would remain free for a few months but that eventually users would have to pay a nominal fee to keep using it. We continued providing the service for free for two years, until the release of TypeWell V7. With the release of V7 we also rolled out a bunch of improvements to make Web Linking even faster and more reliable.

V6 Premium users who choose not to upgrade to V7 can still use Web Linking once they purchase the Web Linking add-on.
Web Linking remains free for V7 Premium users, because the cost of that service along with all maintenance and updates is included in the monthly/annual price for V7 Premium.
Can I still use my existing TypeWell license even if it's not V7?
Yes, if you have an older version of the TypeWell software and still meet the requirements of our end-user license agreement, you may continue to keep that license active.
However, every software product has a lifecycle. We will continue to provide technical support for V6 license users for a while, provided they have download and install the latest stable release of their V6 product. e can no longer provide technical support for TypeWell V5 and earlier versions.
We'd love for all our customers to upgrade to V7 and enjoy the newest features and dictionary updates. That's why we offer a discount to upgrade existing licenses. Do you accept purchase orders?
If your purchasing department must use a purchase order, we can accept your payment by check, but we cannot accept the terms of P.O. conflicts with our end-user license agreement. For simplicity, we prefer to accept your payment by credit card. If you need to pay by check, please contact us.
